Car accidents happen, anywhere, anytime. Sometimes it would be your fault, sometimes it would be others fault. Even you drive carefully and safely, there will always be reckless and irresponsible drivers on the road especially in the Philippines where traffic laws are blatantly taken for granted. Don’t forget flood, typhoon, earthquakes and thieves – the enemies of your beloved car.
You need to have a comprehensive car insurance to protect yourself from financial loss when accidents happen. The comprehensive car insurance will shoulder repair expenses to your car after an accident. Damage repairs due to flood, typhoon and earthquake (acts of God/nature) will also be shouldered by your car insurance.
Upon a legitimate car theft, the actual cash value of the car will be paid by your insurance company. If your car is totally damaged after an accident or natural calamity and could no longer be repaired, car insurance will pay the actual cash value of the car before the unfortunate incident.
When you hit a pedestrian, cash payments will be paid by your insurance for medical expenses and burial expenses (in case of death). Even you and your passengers have some sort of medical and disability coverage from the car insurance. When you damaged a property while driving, your comprehensive car insurance will also help pay the damages.
Car insurance may look like an unnecessary expense but it provides you with enormous peace of mind. If not buying comprehensive car insurance will help you save money, wait until you get into an accident, you will regret not getting one.
Choosing the Best Comprehensive Car Insurance
Now, there are many car insurance companies in the Philippines, it is quite hard to choose the best one. I recommend BPI/MS Insurance corporation, a joint venture between Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) and Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance of Japan. These two companies are well known brands that have been in existence for more than 100 years. They are both leaders in their respective industries: banking and property insurance.
There are about 70 non-life insurance companies in the Philippines. BPI/MS have been consistently on top 3-4 of all important ranking metrics of the Insurance Commission: for the year 2016, top 3 on assets (9.5 billion), top 4 on gross premium written (5.6 billion), top 2 on net income (418 million), top 3 on net premium written (2.6 billion), top 4 on net worth (2.4 billion) and top 3 on premiums earned (2.5 billion). The Insurance Commission is the government agency that regulate and monitor all insurance companies in the Philippines.

While I was driving my car, I accidentally hit a pedestrian. Is liability to other persons covered by BPI/MS Comprehensive Motor Insurance?
Yes! BPI/MS offers two types of coverage to protect from liabilities for injuries caused to other persons:
Compulsory Third Party Liability (CTPL) – This is the basic insurance coverage required by the Land Transportation Office when you register your vehicle. This coverage will answer for the death, disablement and medical expenses of a person injured because of an accident involving your vehicle.
Voluntary Third Party Liability-Bodily Injury (VTPL-BI) – This serves as an additional coverage on top of your basic CTPL, since this will answer for expenses in excess of CTPL’s coverage limit. This is a standard feature of all BPI/MS Comprehensive Motor policies.
What if my vehicle causes damage to another person’s property? Do I have coverage for this?
Don’t worry! BPI/MS offers Voluntary Third Party Liability-Property Damage (VTPL-PD) that provides you with protection in case your vehicle damages other people’s properties. This coverage is also standard to all BPI/MS Comprehensive Motor policies.
Are my vehicle’s passengers covered if they get hurt due to an accident?
Yes! BPI/MS’ Unnamed Passenger Personal Accident (UPPA) is an insurance coverage that will answer for the death, disablement and medical expenses for the driver and passengers of your vehicle in the unfortunate event of an accident. UPPA is optional at a very affordable cost that you may add to your BPI/MS Comprehensive Motor policy.
Do you also cover damages due to Flood, Typhoon or other similar events?
Yes! Natural calamities are inevitable and could cause serious damage to your vehicle. For your added protection, you may request for an additional coverage against Flood, Typhoon, Hurricane, Volcanic Eruption, Earthquake, Strike, Riot and Civil Commotion subject to payment of an additional premium.
